Lake Sweep 2011

Spartanburg Water will be sponsoring its 23rd annual Lake Sweep event on Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 8 a.m. to Noon at Lake Bowen Park.   Lake Sweep is part of a statewide effort and is presented as an opportunity for members of the community to help keep Spartanburg’s waterways and roadsides clean of litter.  In the past, area high schools, colleges, businesses, organizations, and many others within the community have helped to remove over 20,000 pounds of litter each year.  As a result, your efforts have helped Lake Sweep become one of the most successful events in South Carolina!  We hope you will be able to join us again this year.

For those interested in participating, volunteers will be meeting at Lake Bowen Park near the boat landing and Lake Bowen Wardens’ Office (8515 Highway 9 Inman, SC 29349).  Teams of five people will be organized, and prizes will be awarded to the teams who remove the most litter.  All volunteers will receive a Lake Sweep T-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and a raffle ticket for prizes.  The event is free of charge.

In addition, we’ll also be honoring our Earth Day/Lake Sweep T-Shirt contest winner.  In celebration of Earth Day in April, fifth grade students in Spartanburg County schools were given the opportunity to submit t‐shirt designs for Lake Sweep.  The first place winner’s design was used to create the t-shirts for this year’s participants.  This year’s winner is Trent Philips of Boiling Springs Intermediate School.  We will be recognizing him for his award winning design.

Please plan to join us for a morning that promises to be both productive and fun.  For more information, or to volunteer, please contact me by phone at (864) 578-5442 or by email at jmoore@spartanburgwater.org.  For more information, click HERE.

Milliken’s Caddy Up for Auction

Textile magnate and philanthropist Roger Milliken’s 2001 Cadillac is being put up for auction for the United Way of the Piedmont. You can read the full article here.

Why are we posting that here??

We couldn’t resist saying how much we love his personalized tag and the bumper stickers he sported on the car. The car tag, with its “BYN USA” shows his dedication to buying in the USA and the stickers, “Trees are the Answer” and “Sustainability Saves More than You Think” exemplify his love of noble trees and the environment.

Very cool, indeed.
