Spartanburg Sunday Streets!
Posted by tammy | Filed under Learn More--Stuff you should know!
Partners for Active Living (PAL) announced the first annual “Spartanburg Sunday Streets,” a series of active-living street festivals intended to create safe, fun places for people to get out and get active. Spartanburg Sunday Streets will take place on September 12 and 26, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Both events will be held on East Henry Street, between Pine and Union Streets, and the activity area will incorporate the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail and Hot Spot Skate Park.
Spartanburg Sunday Streets involves removing cars from designated streets to allow access by pedestrians, cyclists, families, and pets. Activities along East Henry Street are planned to encourage active participation. At Sunday Streets, participants can enjoy a relaxing yoga session, punch and kick in a fun and upbeat kickboxing class, bounce around in an inflatable castle, take a bike ride, or walk down the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail, watch skateboarders perform high-flying tricks, get important health screenings, and much more!
What a great way to get the family up, out and about spending time in the community! Visit the Partners for Active Living website to learn more!
Mmmm…local eggs!
Posted by tammy | Filed under Learn More--Stuff you should know!
Although SC has thusfar managed to avoid the recent egg recall, it doesn’t stop us from wondering what our eggs are exposed to or where they come from. With the egg scare in the news right now, local egg farmers are seeing a rise in the demand for their eggs. Interested in purchasing local eggs? There a couple of vendors at the Hub City Farmers Market on Saturday mornings as well as at Live Oak Farms in Woodruff. You can also visit Local Harvest and search for a vendor near you!

City of Spartanburg Recycling Update
Posted by tammy | Filed under Learn More--Stuff you should know!
We asked Bill Thompson, Solid Waste Manager for the City of Spartanburg for an update on the City’s Recycling Program. Here’s what we learned:
I am pleased to report on our recycling program. We have just caught our breath after changing over from curb-side sort to single stream. We have been very pleased with the change. It truly seems to be a “win win” scenario. We have increased our number of residents that use our recycling program from about two thousand five hundred to about five thousand one hundred. We have a waiting list for recycling carts, when they come in, that will increase the number by about fifty more. We also have increased our tonnage collected. The first quarter of this year we increased our collection by a little over one hundred tons.
Our residents seem to like the 96 gallon roll carts a lot better than the old bins. We, here at the City of Spartanburg, appreciate the cost savings in less labor hours and equipment use in our collection. Our processor of the recyclables, Sonoco, has been pleased with the quality of the product we are generating.
Another major area of improvement has been injury claims. The new automated method of recycling collection is much safer and has cut down on our people getting hurt at work. In the last six months we have had the lowest reported injury rate in our history.
We are looking to the future with our program. In two and a half years we will be at a point where we will need to renew our processing contract. We have already formed a very impressive and talented committee to look at the path the city should take when we plan a new contract. We will consider all possibilities and recommend to City Council our best plan for approval.
I must thank all who have contributed, and continue to contribute to our recycling program. I look forward to it being one of the best in the Southeast.
Many, many thanks to Bill & his staff for their dedication to our City and to building a stronger recycling program. Keep up the great work!
